Rotterdam Centraal Is Closed All Weekend — No Trains, Including the Schiphol High-Speed Line

Rotterdam Centraal is completely closed to trains this weekend. From 01:00 on Saturday 7 November until 05:00 on Monday 9 November, no trains run to, from or through the station while ProRail replaces the ageing signalling and safety system around it — a job involving around 10,000 separate connections.

The closure bites hardest on three routes. There are no trains between Rotterdam Centraal and Delft Campus, Gouda or Zwijndrecht. The high-speed line is also closed in both directions that matter most: Rotterdam Centraal to Breda, and Rotterdam Centraal to Schiphol Airport. If you were planning to reach Schiphol by train from Rotterdam this weekend, that journey needs a rethink.

NS is running replacement buses, and NS tickets are valid on large parts of the Rotterdam metro and on those buses. The operator is warning that replacement transport will be busy, which is railway language for crowded. Allow serious extra time, and check the NS Journey Planner before you set off rather than trusting a timetable you saved earlier in the week.

Practical alternatives

  • For Schiphol: travel via Utrecht Centraal or Amsterdam, or use a direct coach or taxi from Rotterdam if your flight time is tight.
  • For Delft and The Hague direction: the metro and replacement buses are your main options this weekend.
  • Normal service is due to resume with the first trains on Monday morning, 9 November.

One more date for the diary if you use this line often: from 29 November to 7 December there will also be no trains between Rotterdam Zuid and Barendrecht, again with replacement buses.

StrikeWatch covers disruption, not just strikes — engineering closures like this one strand exactly as many people as a walkout does. We will confirm on Monday morning that services have restarted as planned.
