Lake Como: Varenna Car Ferry Suspended 9–10 November for Pier Works

The Varenna car ferry on Lake Como will be suspended on Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 November 2026 while structural works take place at the Varenna ferry pier.

Navigazione Laghi, which runs the lake’s ferries, announced the suspension on 4 November. The car ferry stops running from 09:10 on Monday 9 November and stays out of service until the works are finished on Tuesday 10 November. No exact time has been given for the ferry to return.

This is a suspension for works, not a strike, and it affects vehicles only. Cars will not be able to use the Varenna vehicle ferry, which is the cross-lake car link to Bellagio, Cadenabbia and Menaggio.

Passenger ferries will keep running as normal, but every departure and arrival at Varenna will use the passenger terminal only while the works are underway.

Drivers who need to cross the lake with a car will have to route around the lake by road instead. The suspension comes as the lake moves into its winter timetable, which runs from 2 November 2026 to 14 March 2027.

The Varenna crossing is one of the main ways for cars to move between the western and eastern shores of Lake Como. Without it, drivers face a long detour around the lake by road, so journeys will take considerably longer than the ferry crossing. Drivers should allow extra time and check road conditions before setting off.

What to do about the Varenna car ferry

If you are travelling by car, do not rely on the Varenna car ferry on 9 or 10 November: plan a road route around the lake instead, and allow plenty of extra time. If you are on foot, passenger ferries still run from Varenna, but remember that all departures and arrivals use the passenger terminal only. Check Navigazione Laghi’s notices before you travel for the latest update on when the car ferry returns. Before you travel, check your trip against the Varenna car ferry dates on 9 and 10 November. Italy has other disruption the same month, and Naples Airport Is Closed for the whole of November, so the Varenna car ferry is not the only Italian closure to plan around.
